A New Chapter for an Ancient Landmark: St Mary’s Churchyard Reopens as a Welcoming Community Space
Watford’s oldest building, St Mary’s Church, stepped into a new chapter on 23rd May 2025 with the official opening of its beautifully rejuvenated churchyard. The revamped St Mary’s Church Open Space was unveiled by Elected Mayor of Watford, Peter Taylor, in a celebration that brought together history, nature, and the local community.
Blending Heritage with Modern Welcoming
With its roots stretching back to the 12th century, St Mary’s Church has stood as a quiet witness to the growth and evolution of Watford. Now, thanks to a thoughtful upgrade led by Watford Borough Council, the churchyard surrounding this historic site has been transformed into an accessible, inviting open space for all to enjoy.
The revitalisation project has focused on making the area more friendly and inclusive, with improved pathways, seating, and landscaping, alongside a special focus on sustainability and biodiversity. Wildflower seeding around the church is already beginning to bloom, bringing colour and supporting pollinators while softening the landscape with natural charm.

A Day of Community Celebration
Opening day was marked by a cheerful gathering of local residents, schoolchildren, councillors, and church leaders. The highlight was a special presentation involving students from St John’s School and Lancaster School, who contributed to the project by designing signage for the newly upgraded space.
The children’s creative efforts were recognised with prizes presented by the Mayor himself—a gesture that underlined the importance of involving young voices in shaping community spaces.

It’s wonderful to see this historic space come to life again, in a way that supports both nature and our community,” said Mayor Taylor. “The work done here makes it easier for everyone to enjoy a moment of calm and connection right in the centre of Watford.

A Living Space for All
The transformation of St Mary’s Churchyard goes beyond beautification. It’s a signal of how heritage spaces can be adapted with care to serve modern needs, offering a green retreat in the town centre, a quiet spot for reflection, and an educational opportunity for future generations.
This renewed space supports wildlife, wellbeing, and community spirit, creating new stories on top of centuries of history.

Looking Ahead
With the new open space now fully accessible and blooming with promise, the churchyard at St Mary’s is set to host a new wave of life, from quiet contemplation to community events and nature engagement.
Whether you’re a long-time Watford resident or a curious visitor, the space invites you to pause, reflect, and enjoy a little pocket of peace in the heart of the town.
